'Trascasas' Reserve 2007
Yet another under-recognized Spanish gem. Cigales neighbors Ribero del Duero directly northwest and shares it's affinity for the Tempranillo grape. While Ribero del Duero specializes in a beefy style, this Cigales better reflects the elegant, cool, and old-school Rioja wines. Herbal and nutty aromas frame juicy wild strawberry and red raspberry. A woodsy palate boasts autumn leaves, and white oak, but is generously accented with a dose of red currants. Excuse our evocation of Red Riding Hood wandering through a deep dark forest, but we think you get the idea. The fabled throwback you've been looking for.

"It is well balanced and underpinned by fine tannins, while hints of espresso infused the rounded black fruit laced and tobacco on the long finish."
